How to Host a Pints & Purls Knitting Party

A Simple Guide to Hosting Your Own Sip & Stitch

There’s something especially fun about knitting with other people. Add a favorite drink, a cozy gathering spot, and a table full of yarn, and you’ve got the makings of a pretty great night.

That’s the idea behind Pints & Purls: a casual knitting get-together where beginners and experienced knitters can sit together, learn something new, and enjoy a little time away from the usual routine.

We’re hosting our own Pints & Purls here in New Jersey this fall, but you don’t have to live nearby to join the fun. You can host your own Pints & Purls—or Sip & Stitch—almost anywhere.

And it doesn’t need to be complicated.

What Is Pints & Purls?

Think of Pints & Purls as part knitting circle, part beginner knitting workshop, and part night out with friends.

The “pints” are entirely optional, of course. Your gathering could happen over craft beer, wine, coffee, tea, cider, or sparkling water. The important part is creating a relaxed place where people can sit, chat, and make something with their hands.

You don’t need a room full of experienced knitters, either. In fact, a Pints & Purls party is a wonderful way to introduce friends to knitting for the first time.

Step 1: Pick Your Place

You can host a knitting party almost anywhere with comfortable seating, decent lighting, and enough table space for yarn and needles.

A few ideas:

  • A local brewery or taproom

  • A coffee shop

  • A bookstore

  • A library or community room

  • A neighborhood clubhouse

  • A church or community center

  • Your own living room or backyard

If you’re approaching a local business, ask whether they have a quieter weeknight when they’d welcome a small group. A gathering of 10 or 20 people buying drinks or snacks can be appealing on a normally slow evening.

Step 2: Keep the Project Beginner-Friendly

For a group event, simpler is better.

You want a project that a brand-new knitter can begin during the party without feeling rushed or overwhelmed. Nobody needs to finish that night—the fun is in getting started together.

Our Level 1 Learn to Knit Scarf Kit is designed for exactly this kind of beginner experience. Each guest has their own yarn, needles, pattern, and access to step-by-step instruction they can continue using at home.

More experienced knitters can bring their own works in progress and join the fun, too.

Step 3: Decide What Your Ticket Includes

If you're organizing a larger gathering, charging a ticket price can make hosting surprisingly simple.

Your ticket might include:

  • A beginner knitting kit

  • A drink ticket

  • Light snacks

  • Two hours of knitting and social time

  • Hands-on help from experienced knitters

  • Door prizes or giveaways

Or keep it very simple: everyone purchases a kit and buys their own drinks or food.

There’s no single right way to do it.

Step 4: Find a Few Knitting Helpers

If you expect several complete beginners, recruit a couple of knitters who can circulate and help.

They don't need to be professional knitting teachers. Having someone nearby who can help with a dropped stitch, demonstrate a technique again, or reassure a new knitter that their first few rows are supposed to look a little wonky can make the evening much more enjoyable.

One important tip: don't try to teach everyone at exactly the same pace.

People learn differently. Give your guests time to experiment, chat, get a drink, and come back to their knitting.

This is a party, not a class.

Step 5: Add a Little Something Extra

You absolutely don't need decorations, elaborate favors, or a packed agenda.

But a few small touches can make the evening feel special.

Put bowls of yarn or knitted samples on the tables. Make a simple sign for the event. Offer a door prize. Create a playlist. Ask guests to wear something they've knitted if they're already knitters.

You could even give a prize for the most gloriously imperfect first row.

Hosting a Larger Group? We Can Help With the Kits.

If you'd like everyone to start with the same beginner-friendly project, The Spinning Hand offers special Pints & Purls party pricing on our Level 1 Learn to Knit Kits (regularly $39 each.)

5 kits — $35 each

10 kits — $30 each

20 kits — $20 each

Free U.S. shipping is included.

That gives you flexibility to organize your event however you'd like. Pass the kit cost directly along to your guests, include it in a ticket price that helps cover your venue or refreshments, or simply gather a few friends around your kitchen table.

You Don't Need to Be an Event Planner

This might be the most important part.

You don't need a private event space. You don't need matching decorations or a beautifully styled grazing table.

Five friends, five knitting kits, a bottle of wine, and somebody's living room absolutely counts.

The whole point of Pints & Purls is to get people together, put down the phones for a while, make something with our hands, and remember how much fun it can be to learn something new alongside other people.

So pick a date. Invite a few people. Find a cozy place to gather.

We'll bring the knitting.
